Holi - The Festival of Colours, Jaipur, Mar 2009 : This year Anu & I were in Jaipur (Hindi: जयपुर) on 11th March 2009 during the festival of HOLI. Here are pictures from the celebrations.

Holi – the festival of color is marked as the opening festival in Hindu calendar and it falls on the full moon day in the month of PHALGUN in the lunar calendar. People enjoy themselves playing with several colours and celebrate the whole day. Originally Holi was regarded to be the festival to celebrate good harvests and fertility of the land. The main day, Holi, also known as Dhulheti, Dhulandi or Dhulendi, is celebrated by people throwing coloured powder and coloured water at each other either from water guns, ballons or buckets. Bonfires are lit the previous evening, also known as Holika Dahan (death of Holika) or Chhoti Holi (little Holi). The bonfires are lit in memory of the miraculous escape that young Prahlad had when Demoness Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu, carried him into the fire. Holika was burnt but Prahlad, a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu, escaped without any injuries due to his unshakable devotion. This year the celebrations were a bit subdued due to water scarcity as well as the timing coinciding with the school examinations. All the same it was fun!

Elephant Festival 2009, Jaipur Mar 2009 : The Elephant Festival held in Jaipur (Hindi: जयपुर), Rajasthan, is charming event.
Elephants have long been associated with the royalty of India. They have been used as Royal careers for centuries. The animals have thus come to be associated with royalty and have been loved and respected by everyone. The Elephant Festival held in Jaipur, is organized by the Tourism Department of Rajasthan during the time of Holi Festival. Jaipur is the ideal location being the state capital and one of the most important erstwhile princely states of Rajasthan. This popular and vibrant festival is a famous fair & festival of Rajasthan State.

The one day Jaipur Elephant Festival coincides with Holi, the Indian festival of colors. Depending on the Lunar Calendar, usually this festival is held in the month of March. The handlers or mahouts decorate their elephants in regal attire, and make them walk in procession at the start of the day. The procession heads to Chaugan, the vast ground in Jaipur where this festival is hosted. The procession is watched by thousands of tourists and locals. After reaching Chougan, the popular events are kicked off. The most important events are the elephant pageant, polo match, elephant race, and tug-of-war. The elephant pageant showcases the best elephants of the city. These magnificent animals are dressed up elegantly in regal garb, much as in the old days when such processions were part of everyday life of the city. The gallant elephants walk up to the judges much like fashion model divas do on a ‘ramp’ at a beauty contests. The elephants are observed up close by the spectators and the judges. The best elephant wins the coveted ‘best decorated elephant’ shield. Although Elephants the main focus, there is a lot of other activities like cultural songs and dance performances as well as this being around the time of Holi lot of colour throwing and fun with surprises. This year the event was held on 10th March, 2009.

SurajKund Mela, Haryana (Delhi), India, Feb 2009 : The Surajkund Crafts Mela 2009 began on 1st Feb 2009. The 23rd annual event was inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil.
Surajkund which is located in Haryana is just an hour's drive from New Delhi. Surajkund comes alive for two weeks with the rhythm and beats of folk dances, lots of shopping opportunity and a riot of colors each year in early Feb. This year the Surajkund Mela was open from February 1-15 and the theme state was Madhya Pradesh which is located in the heart of India. Artists from MP & other states displayed their prowess in folk painting, batik & leather craft, wooden laquarware, Thewa art and all-time favourites like Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees.

The annual Surajkund festival is widely known to showcase the finest handlooms, handicrafts, authentic fragrances & flavours of rich Indian cuisines. Its large open space food court is a great place to try different foods and hang out with friends and family. As North India's winter turns briefly into spring, a caravan of 400 National and State awardee craftpersons from every corner of India wind their way to Surajkund. This year more than 50 craftpersons from SAARC Nations, Thailand and Egypt participated in the Surajkund Crafts Mela. At Surajkund Mela, the artisans demonstrate their skills as well as sell their creations crafted by their delicate hands into the most beautiful pieces of work. All day, at the Chaupal & later at Natyashala, various dance troupes perform to enthralled audiences.

The Surajkund Mela is organized by Haryana Tourism and is held near Faridabad (outskirts of New Delhi). The handicrafts displayed and sold include products of leather, brass & bell metal, cane & bamboo, ceramic, clay dolls, jute, masks & puppets, sandalwood carving, artistic weaving, prints & paintings, needlwork and embroidery etc. This year there was quite a bit of security. Visitors who payed Rs. 50 as an entrance ticket enjoyed savouring cuisine of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal, and Gujarat apart from Egypt, Chinese, and Thai cuisine.

First held in 1981, the event is a popular showcase for traditional Indian arts and crafts and includes a bustling food fair and plenty of live entertainment. For additional details visit: http://haryanatourism.gov.in/surajkund/surajkundmela2009.asp
