Maha Shivaratri Celebration at Chinmaya Mission, Sandeepany, Mumbai. Feb'09 : The Maha Shivaratri (Mahashivratri) Hindu festival was celebrated with great religious fervor at the Chinmaya Mission, Sandeepany, Powai on Monday, February 23rd, 2009. Shivaratri is celebrated on the 6th night of the dark Phalgun (Feb or March) every year.

Over two lakh (200 thousand) devotees participated in this special prayer and chanted "Om Namah Shivay" until midnight. "Abishekam" was performed by the priests, pundits to Lord Shiva. The deities were beautifully decorated with colorful flowers and ornaments. Devotees offered flowers, milk, honey, coconuts, fruits and special food..

According to the Hindu mythology, Maha Shivaratri is considered to be an auspicious night to offer prayers to Lord Shiva as He saved the entire Universe from the evil effects on this particular night that occurs on the 11th Lunar month, Maasi. It is believed that one who stays awake during Maha Shivaratri and prays to Lord Shiva sincerely, is sure to attain salvation. Some devotees even abstain from eating food all day and break their fast only after night long worship. Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the 'Tandava'. It is also believed that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati Ma. The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael (Bilva) leaves to the Lord Shiva, all day fasting and an all night long vigil along with chanting. On this day Shiva devotees observe fast and offer fruits, flowers and bel leaves on Shiva Linga.

Shri Mangal Moorati Moorya (Ganesh Idol), Talegaon, 17th Jan'09 : Swami Tejomayanandaji, Global Chief of Chinmay Mission was the chief guest of the function inaugurating the Ganesh Idol at Talegaon on 17th January 2009. The installing of Shri Mangal Moorati Moorya (Ganesh Idol) has been a dream project of Basant Kumar Birla and Sarala Birla. The beautifully sculpted idol of Ganesha, stands towering on a hillock astride the Pune-Mumbai express and NH-4. Conceived in 2006 as a tribute to the people of Maharashtra who cherish the lord so dearly, the image can be viewed from miles as it seems to shower kind blessings on all those who pass by.

The statue measures 54 ft in height, squatting on a 18 ft high platform, rising in all its graciousness to an imposing height of 72 ft. About 180 steps from the base of the hillock lead to the statue. All these figures within themselves add to the auspicious figure of 9 (7+2 = 9, 1+8=9, 5+4=9 and 1+8+0=9). The project was designed by the famous sculptor Sri Matu Ram Verma and his son, Naresh Kumar Verma of Pilani, Rajasthan. It took almost three years of relentless hard work by two dozen skilled craftsmen of Rajasthan and numerous labourers under the supervision of Naresh Kumar. The idol is made of reinforced concrete, smoothened beautifully and covered with a copper coating

BK Birla, his wife Sarala Birla, Rajshree Birla and Chairman of the Aditya Birla group, Kumar Mangalam Birla, and other family members performed the puja.

Ganapathi Visarjan Sept 2004 : Ganesh Chaturthi [Birthday Of Lord Ganesh] is one of the most popular of Hindu festivals. This is the birthday of Lord Ganesha and is known as the day most sacred to Lord Ganesha. It falls on the 4th day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada (August - September). It is observed throughout India, as well as by devoted Hindus in all parts of the world. The celebrations are really big in Mumbai as can be seen here in the pictures taken at Chowpatty beach.

Lord Ganesha is the elephant-headed God. He is worshipped first in any prayers. His Names are repeated first before any auspicious work is begun, before any kind of worship is begun. He is the Lord of power and wisdom. He is the eldest son of Lord Shiva and the elder brother of Skanda or Kartikeya. By worshipping Lord Ganesha mothers hope to earn for their sons the sterling virtues of Ganesha. During the festivals day's beautifully sculpted Ganesh idols are installed in the Mandaps (large tents) that are colourfully decorated, depicting religious themes or current events. There are huge public displays of Ganesh idols with Aarti (song of devotion to God) and loud music and dancing by the devotees. Later these idols are ceremoniously immersed into the sea (or lakes).
