Penang (pronounced /pəˈnæŋ/; (Malay: Pulau Pinang)) is a state in Malaysia which is located on the north-west coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca. The name "Penang" comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means island of the betel nut tree. It is the second smallest state in Malaysia. Penang is often known as "The Pearl of the Orient" and "Pulau Pinang Pulau Mutiara" (Penang Island of Pearls).
